Supreme Court Order – Interim ban on the counselling for admission in IITs

The Supreme Court has imposed an interim ban on the counselling for admission to the engineering courses in IITs.
There are 23 IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) all over the country in cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, and Bhuvaneswar. There are over 10000 seats available for admission.
These are filled up on the basis of performance in the JEE (Joint Entrance Examination – Advanced). The Chennai IIT has undertaken the responsibility for the recruitments in all IITs for this academic year 2017-18. Accordingly, the rank or merit list based on the performance of JEE was released recently by IIT Chennai.
In this situation, a petition was submitted to the Supreme Court regarding the issue of grace marks being given for 2 questions which were wrongly asked.
This petition came up for an enquiry yesterday under the bench of Judges Deepak Misra and A. M. Kanvilkar.
After the enquiry, the judges imposed an interim ban for the counselling and admission of students in IITs. The judges ruled that this interim ban will hold till the next order on this issue. The case was adjourned to 10th July (Monday).
